Dishwasher Not Drying? Causes and Fixes

A dishwasher not drying your dishes is most often caused by an empty rinse aid dispenser, a cool or economy cycle selected instead of a heated one, or dishes packed too tightly to let air and heat circulate. Refill the dispenser, switch to a hotter wash with the heat dry option turned on, load with gaps between items so nothing nests together, and crack the door open at the end of the cycle to let steam escape. Those four changes fix the majority of cases where a dishwasher is leaving dishes wet. It helps to know how your machine dries in the first place. Older and mid-range dishwashers use a heating element in the base to warm the air and evaporate the water. Many newer models use condensation drying, where a hot final rinse lets the dishes dry as the stainless tub cools. Both rely on good loading and a wetting agent, which is why those are the first things to check whichever type you have.

Why is my dishwasher not drying?

A dishwasher not drying comes down to one of three everyday causes far more often than a fault: no wetting agent in the dispenser, a cycle that never applied enough heat, or dishes crammed together so the warm air cannot reach them. Work through those first, because a dishwasher not drying dishes properly is usually fixed by a top-up and a setting change rather than a repair. Only once they are ruled out is it worth suspecting the machine itself.

Cause 1: The rinse aid is empty

Rinse aid is the single biggest factor in drying, and a dishwasher leaving dishes wet is very often simply out of it. It breaks the surface tension of water so it sheets off the dishes instead of clinging in droplets that sit and stay wet. Without it, especially on plastics and in condensation-drying machines, everything comes out beaded with water even when the wash was perfect.

Find the dispenser next to the detergent door on the inside of the door, twist off the cap, and fill it to the full mark. Turn the dosage dial up a notch if your dishes are still spotty or damp. An all-in-one tablet does include some wetting agent, but topping up the dedicated dispenser as well makes a clear difference to drying. Cause 2: The wrong cycle or heat dry is off

A dishwasher not drying is often just running a cycle that was never going to dry well. Eco and quick cycles use less heat to save energy and water, and less heat means less drying. Many machines also have a separate heated dry, extra dry or sanitise option that has to be switched on, and if it is off the machine finishes the wash and stops without a proper dry phase.

Select a normal or heavy cycle rather than eco or quick, and turn on the heat dry setting if your model has one. A hotter final rinse leaves more heat in the dishes to evaporate the water. Check your manual for which cycles include a heated dry, because it varies between models and picking the right one is often the whole fix for a dishwasher not drying.

Cause 3: Overloading and how you stack

Even with the dispenser full and the right cycle, a dishwasher will leave dishes wet if they are packed too tightly. Water pools in upturned cup bases and cannot drain from items nested inside each other, and crowded racks stop the hot air moving around everything. Plastics are the worst, because they hold little heat and dry poorly compared with glass and china.

Load with space between items so air can circulate, angle cups, bowls and containers so water runs off rather than pooling, and keep plastics on the top rack away from where water collects. Do not overfill the racks. Give bowls and mugs a slight tilt. Better spacing lets the drying phase reach every surface and is often why a dishwasher not drying suddenly comes good.

Cause 4: Not opening the door and unloading order

Two simple habits help with a dishwasher not drying fully, and both are worth trying before you assume a fault. First, open the door a hand’s width as soon as the cycle finishes so the trapped steam escapes and the residual heat finishes the dishes, rather than letting moist air settle back onto them. Second, unload the bottom rack first. Water that collects in cups and glasses on the top rack drips down onto the clean dishes below if you empty the top first, which can leave you thinking the machine did not dry when it did.

When a dishwasher not drying needs a technician

If the dispenser is full, you are running a hot cycle with heated drying on, the dishes are well spaced, and the machine is still not drying, the fault may be in the drying system itself. On a heated-dry machine, the heating element that warms the air can fail, and on models with a drying fan or a vent that a fan drives, that fan or its control can fail. A temperature sensor reporting the wrong reading can also cut the dry phase short. These are internal electrical parts that carry mains power alongside water, so diagnosing and replacing them is a job for a licensed technician, not a DIY repair.
