Common causes of a fridge not getting cold

A blocked or frosted air vent

The vent that carries cold air from the freezer into the fridge can ice over. Once it is clogged with frost, cold air cannot reach the fresh-food section, so you end up with a fridge that is not cold but a freezer that is. This is one of the most common reasons behind the “fridge not cold but freezer is” complaint.

Dirty condenser coils

The condenser coils release the heat the fridge removes from inside. When they are coated in dust, pet hair and grime, they cannot shed heat efficiently and the whole fridge struggles to cool. Coils are often found behind or underneath the unit and are a common cause of gradual, whole-fridge warming.

A failing evaporator or condenser fan

Fans move air across the cold parts and around the coils. If the evaporator fan that pushes cold air into the fridge fails, the fridge stops getting cold even though the system is still running. A fan fault is an internal repair.

Worn or dirty door seals

If the rubber door seal is torn, perished or dirty, warm room air leaks in continuously. The fridge runs harder and still cannot hold temperature, and you may notice condensation or the motor running non-stop. Seals are a common and often affordable fix.

Poor placement or overloading

A fridge crammed so full that air cannot circulate, or one pushed hard against a wall in a hot spot with no room to breathe, will not cool evenly. Kitchens that get very warm can also push an older fridge past what it can manage.

A refrigerant or compressor fault

If the sealed cooling system has a refrigerant leak, or the compressor is failing, the fridge loses its ability to make cold air at all. This is internal, sealed-system work. Safe checks you can do yourself

These checks are safe and non-invasive. None of them involve opening the sealed cooling system, touching electrical parts or removing internal panels. If the fridge is still not cold after these, call a professional.

  • Check the temperature setting. It is easy for a dial or digital control to be knocked to a warmer setting. Set the fridge to around 3 to 4 degrees and the freezer to around minus 18.
  • Make sure air can circulate. Remove any overpacking, and keep items clear of the internal air vents inside the fridge and freezer so cold air can flow freely.
  • Check the door seals. Run your hand around the closed door for escaping cold air, and clean the rubber seals with warm soapy water. A perished or torn seal needs replacing.
  • Give it room to breathe. Make sure there is a gap between the back and sides of the fridge and the wall or cabinetry so heat can escape.
  • Vacuum the condenser coils. If you can safely reach the coils at the back or underneath with the fridge switched off at the wall, vacuum off the dust. Do not pull the fridge apart to reach them.
  • Try a full defrost. If you suspect a frosted vent, empty the fridge, switch it off and leave the doors open for a few hours to let any ice melt, then switch it back on. If it cools normally afterwards and then warms up again in a day or two, the defrost system needs a technician.

Anything beyond this, checking the fans, the defrost heater, the thermostat or the sealed refrigerant system, needs a licensed technician. These involve electrical components and refrigerant, so they are not safe or legal to attempt yourself.
