A dryer that runs a full cycle and leaves you with warm, damp clothes is more frustrating than one that does not start at all. At least a dead dryer tells you what is wrong.
Here is the thing most people get wrong about this fault: they assume the heating element has failed. Far more often the element is working perfectly and the problem is airflow. A dryer dries by moving hot air through the load and carrying the moisture away. Block that airflow anywhere along the path and the machine will happily tumble hot, wet air around for two hours and achieve very little.
These are the eight causes we see most often, starting with the ones you can check yourself in ten minutes.
The airflow checks worth doing first
Switch the dryer off at the wall before checking anything. Then work through these four in order.
1. A clogged lint filter
This is the single most common cause, and it catches people out because the filter can look clean while being coated in an invisible film. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a residue that seals the mesh over months.
Pull the filter out and run it under a tap. If the water pools on the surface instead of running straight through, the mesh is blocked. Scrub it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, dry it completely, and refit it. Do this properly every few months, not just the visible lint after every load.
2. A blocked or crushed vent hose
On a vented dryer, the exhaust hose is where lint quietly accumulates. If the dryer is pushed hard against a wall, the hose can also be crushed flat behind it.
Disconnect the hose, shake it out, and check the outside vent flap actually opens when the dryer runs. A vent that has been painted shut or blocked by a bird’s nest will stop a perfectly healthy dryer from drying.
3. The room has nowhere to put the moisture
A vented dryer in a small closed laundry is simply recycling its own damp air. If the walls sweat and the room feels like a sauna after a cycle, the dryer is not faulty, it is suffocating.
Open a window, leave the door ajar, or have the dryer vented outside properly. This one costs nothing to test and resolves a fair number of call-outs.
4. Overloading, or clothes going in too wet
Air needs room to move between garments. A drum packed to the top will tumble as one solid mass and dry unevenly, leaving damp patches in the middle.
It is also worth checking your washing machine is spinning properly. If the washer is leaving clothes wetter than it should, the dryer gets blamed for a fault that is not its own. Our guide to a washing machine that will not spin covers how to tell.
5. Condenser or heat-pump specific faults
Condenser and heat-pump dryers do not vent outside. They pull moisture out of the air and collect it in a tank or drain it away, which means they have their own set of blockages.
The condenser unit itself needs cleaning. On most models it slides out from behind a panel at the bottom of the machine and can be rinsed under a tap. When it clogs with lint, drying performance falls off a cliff.
Also check the water tank is actually emptying. A full tank will stop many machines mid-cycle, and a blocked drain line does the same thing quietly.
6. A failed heating element or thermal cut-out
If the airflow is genuinely clear and the drum air is running cold, then yes, the heat is the problem.
Most dryers have a thermal cut-out, a safety fuse that blows when the machine overheats. Here is the important part: a blown cut-out is almost always a symptom, not the cause. It blew because restricted airflow made the machine overheat. Replacing the fuse without finding the blockage means it will blow again, sometimes within a load or two.
Heating elements and cut-outs sit in live circuits behind the cabinet, so this is technician work rather than a DIY fix.
7. Faulty moisture sensor
Auto-sensing dryers use metal sensor bars inside the drum to detect when the load is dry and end the cycle. Fabric softener residue builds up on these bars and insulates them, so the machine reads the load as dry when it is not, and shuts down early.
Wipe the bars with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth. If auto cycles finish suspiciously early but a timed cycle dries fine, this is very likely your fault.
8. Worn drum seals or a tired belt
Perished felt seals around the drum let hot air escape before it ever reaches your clothes, so the machine works hard and dries slowly. You may notice the outside of the cabinet getting hotter than usual.
A stretched belt causes the drum to tumble sluggishly or intermittently, which stops the load turning over properly. Both are routine repairs on most models.
Why a lint-blocked dryer is worth taking seriously
Beyond the damp washing, restricted airflow makes a dryer run hotter than it was designed to. That shortens the life of the element, the thermostats and the bearings, and lint is combustible.
Cleaning the filter properly and keeping the vent path clear is the highest-value five minutes of appliance maintenance in the house.

Does the brand matter?
The diagnostic path is much the same across brands, but the parts differ. Heat-pump models from Bosch and Miele have more sophisticated condenser assemblies that reward regular cleaning. Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux and Westinghouse vented models are simpler machines where airflow and elements cover most faults.
