An oven that will not heat has a habit of announcing itself at the worst possible time, usually with a roast already in it and people arriving in an hour.
The useful thing about oven faults is that they are quite readable. How the oven fails tells you a great deal about what has failed. An oven that is stone cold points somewhere quite different from one that gets warm but never reaches temperature, or one that trips the power the moment it is switched on.
Here are the six causes we find most often, and how to tell which one you are looking at. A word of caution up front: ovens run on high-current circuits and, in the case of gas models, on gas. There is very little safe DIY here beyond observation, and in Western Australia gas work must be carried out by a licensed technician. This guide is about diagnosing accurately, not about opening the back panel.
Start by reading the symptom
Before anything else, work out which of these describes your oven. It narrows the field immediately.
- ✓Completely dead, no display, no light, no fan → power supply or main board
- ✓Display works, oven stays cold → heating element or thermostat
- ✓Gets warm but never reaches temperature → element partially failed, or thermostat drifting
- ✓Heats but cooks unevenly, burning one side → fan, element or a door seal problem
- ✓Trips the power when switched on → failed element earthing out
- ✓Grill works but the oven does not, or vice versa → the failed component is the one that does not work
1. A failed bake element
The most common single cause on electric ovens. The bake element is the loop at the bottom of the cavity, and it does not last forever.
When it fails visibly you can sometimes see it: a blister, a split, a bright scorched section, or the element sagging out of shape. Often though it fails invisibly, with the element having gone open circuit somewhere inside its sheath, and it looks perfectly normal.
The tell is that the grill still works while the oven does not, because they are separate elements. If your grill browns a piece of toast beautifully but the oven will not come up to temperature, the bake element is the prime suspect.
Elements are inexpensive parts and replacing one is routine, but it means disconnecting a high-current circuit inside the cavity, so it is a technician job.
2. A failed thermostat or temperature sensor
The thermostat tells the oven when to stop heating. When it drifts out of calibration, the oven either undershoots badly, so your cakes never set, or overshoots and burns everything at supposedly moderate temperatures.
When it fails completely, the oven often will not heat at all, because it never gets the signal to start.
A useful home test: put an oven thermometer on the middle shelf, set the oven to 180C, and give it 20 minutes. If the reading is out by more than about 15 to 20 degrees, the thermostat or sensor needs attention. This is worth knowing before you replace an oven you assumed was cooked.
3. An element that trips the power
If your oven trips the safety switch the moment it is switched on, or a few minutes into preheating, an element has almost certainly failed to earth. The element sheath has cracked and the live conductor is now touching the metal, which is exactly what a safety switch exists to catch.
This one deserves emphasis: do not keep resetting the breaker and trying again. The safety switch is doing its job and telling you there is a live fault. Stop using the oven and book it in.
The repair is usually straightforward once identified, most often the same element replacement described above.
4. Fan-forced oven with a failed fan or fan element
Fan-forced ovens have a circular element behind the back panel wrapped around the fan. If the fan motor seizes, the oven will often refuse to heat as a safety measure, or will heat very unevenly with hot spots.
If you can hear the fan running but food is browning on one side only, it is more likely the fan element has partially failed, or the door seal is leaking heat.
Listen for the fan when you switch the oven on. Silence, where you would normally hear it, is a strong clue.
5. Worn door seal or a dropped door
This one gets overlooked. A perished door seal, or hinges that have sagged so the door no longer sits flush, lets heat pour out. The oven runs constantly, never quite gets there, and your energy bill quietly climbs.
Test it with a sheet of paper. Close the door on it and try to pull it out. If it slides out freely with no resistance, and it does the same at several points around the door, the seal or the hinges need attention.
Both are inexpensive repairs and both make an immediate difference to cooking performance.
6. Gas oven: ignition, thermocouple or gas valve
On a gas oven, a burner that clicks but will not light, or lights and then goes out after a few seconds, usually points to the igniter or the thermocouple, the safety device that shuts the gas off if it does not detect a flame.
If you can smell gas at any point, stop. Turn the appliance off, turn the gas off at the isolation valve if you can reach it safely, open windows, do not operate electrical switches, and get it looked at.
In Western Australia, gas appliance work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter or technician. There is no safe DIY path here, and it is not worth improvising with.
Is it worth repairing, or is it time for a new oven?
Most oven faults are worth repairing. Elements, thermostats, seals and hinges are all inexpensive parts fitted in a single visit, and a good quality built-in oven will run for many years past its first element.
The conversation changes if the oven is old and the fault is a main control board, or if multiple things are failing at once. A technician should give you honest numbers before any work goes ahead so you can decide with real figures rather than a guess.

Keeping an oven out of trouble
Elements and thermostats fail with age, and no amount of care prevents that entirely. But a few habits genuinely extend the life of an oven.
Do not line the base with foil, because it traps heat against the element and reflects it back into the thermostat. Clean up spills before they carbonise. Check the door seal once a year with the paper test. And if the oven is a workhorse, a periodic oven service will catch a tired seal or a drifting thermostat before it ruins a dinner.
If you are replacing rather than repairing, having the new unit put in by someone who does oven installation properly matters more than people expect, particularly for built-ins where ventilation clearances affect how long the electronics last.
